1930s large size silver rectangular vintage Longines watch.
Case size 39.5 X 26mm excl crown
Strap size 20mm
Ref 1050
A fine and elegant large size 1933 Longines Art Deco wristwatch, presented in a beautifully proportioned rectangular sterling silver case. Measuring 39.5 × 26mm, the case displays the distinctive geometric styling and refined proportions characteristic of the Art Deco period.
The solid silver case bears London import hallmarks for 1933, together with the silver fineness mark 925, confirming its sterling silver content. The case is also stamped with the initials AB, the registered sponsor's mark associated with Arthur Baume of Baume & Co., the established British importers and agents for Longines.
Arthur Baume was a prominent figure in the British watch trade, and his company became the London agents for Longines in 1876. Based in London's renowned Hatton Garden jewellery district, Baume & Co. played an important role in introducing Longines watches to the British market. The presence of the AB mark is therefore a particularly interesting historical feature, linking this watch to the longstanding relationship between Longines and its British representatives.
Of further interest, both the case and movement bear the same serial number, an attractive and important detail supporting the originality of this early Longines wristwatch.
The dial features classic Arabic numerals, elegant moon-shaped hands and a subsidiary seconds dial, creating a beautifully balanced appearance typical of the 1930s. The combination of the rectangular silver case, traditional dial layout and distinctive hands captures the understated sophistication of pre-war Swiss watchmaking.
The Longines Calibre 10.68Z Movement
Housed within is the highly regarded Longines Calibre 10.68Z, a beautifully engineered 15-jewel manual-winding movement, signed Longines, 15 Jewels, Swiss Made.
Introduced in 1932, the Calibre 10.68Z was developed during an important period in the history of Longines, when the company was establishing an outstanding reputation for the precision and quality of its wristwatch movements.
The calibre incorporated a subsidiary seconds mechanism, allowing the small seconds hand to be displayed separately at the lower part of the dial, a distinctive feature of many elegant pre-war wristwatches.
The 10.68Z became one of Longines' important early wristwatch calibres and was used in a variety of quality timepieces throughout the 1930s and beyond. Today, it remains highly regarded by vintage watch enthusiasts for its traditional construction, historical significance and the exceptional engineering standards associated with Longines.
The matching case and movement numbers add further interest, providing an important link between the original Swiss movement and its British-hallmarked silver case.
The watch is fitted with a leather strap measuring 20mm between the lugs, complementing the silver case and maintaining the timeless elegance associated with classic 1930s dress watches.
