A very fine example of a Borgel-cased watch retailed by Asprey, dating from 1915. The watch features a white enamel dial in exceptional condition, with Roman numerals, a distinctive red “12”, and a subsidiary seconds dial. The dial remains remarkably well preserved for its age. The Borgel case is in excellent condition, showing sharp lines and quality construction, with a monogram engraved on the case back. The Birmingham hallmark dates the watch to 1915. The inner case also marked FB [ The Borgel Watch Case Company of Geneva] The watch is accompanied by a vintage Asprey presentation box, adding further charm and collectability to this classic timepiece.
François Borgel is best known today for the wristwatches worn by officers during the First World War—pieces now commonly referred to as Borgel officer’s watches or Borgel trench watches. Their popularity among soldiers at the front cemented the Borgel name in early wristwatch history.
