Early 19th Century French Bronze clock of Chronos.

£5,950.00

H: 53.5 cm W:49 cm D: 22cm

A finely executed model depicting Chronos, the personification of Time, shown dramatically carrying time away. The superbly modelled and crisply cast bronze figure portrays Chronos holding a scythe in one hand while supporting the clock beneath his arm, creating a strong and symbolic composition.

The gilt engine turned dial having its original gilding, signed not by the clockmaker but the renowned French modeller and gilder Galle. The outer bezel depicting a snake eating its own tail.

The figure is mounted on an elegant red marble base, raised on original bronze feet.

The clock is fitted with an 8-day movement with a silk suspension, striking the hours and half hours on a bell.
