A stunning Art Nouveau oak cased mantle timepiece. The case having stunning copper and ebony inlay to the front. The movement of German origin strikes the hours and ting tang quarters on twin gongs. The silvered dial having Roman numerals, blued steel spade style hands and signed for Birch and Gaydon London.

Birch and Gaydon was a watchmaking company founded in 1790 taking on the name Birch and Gaydon in 1877. By that time they were established as well known watch and chronometer makers and high class silversmiths and jewellers .In 1825 the business moved to 167 Fenchurch St. London. The company became a leader in new artistic styles such as Art Nouveau and was taken over by Aspreys in 1959.
